A common sight out on the Palouse are the huge grain silos jutting up out of the rolling landscape. Because of the enormous amount of grain harvested out of the fields during the fall, it becomes necessary for the farmers to store it in these huge bins until they can sell it and ship it out by train.  The architecture, form, and texture of these structures is fascinating and makes for some great subject matter.  The numerous ladders, augurs, tracks, and platforms all supply a wonderful maze of lines and shapes, all combining to form a fantastic location for photographic adventure and study.

Although I feel that subjects like this are better represented in direct sunlight, bringing out the contrast in shadows and highlights and giving depth to the surrounding textures, yet in this shot I like the way the shade has cast this shot in even, soft light, bringing out subtle details in the shadows while still maintaining integrity in the bright areas.  It makes me appreciate the photo more for its content rather than for its stark contrasts.  I don’t know, I suppose the ultimate determination must be made by the viewer, but it’s a new way of thinking for me.
